I was driving down a dirt road in Warmbaths, while it was raining, at approx 70km/h. My vehicle skidded in the slippery road, as I tried to pull the vehicle back on track I lost total control and it started rolling. Fortunately the body of the vehicle is strong and no one got seriously hurt. However if we didn’t have our seatbelts on it could have been fatal. I was really surprised that such a large vehicle that looks pretty stable rolled over so easily.

Hi chaps!
I’ve got the 2008 model. After 10 000km Toyota replaced my tyres as well because of the same issue of usability etc. The replaced tyres were not really the answer to the problem. I do about 300km gravel roads ever month and agree with all the other Fortuner drivers that are complaining….. I wonder why they recall certain Toyota models with accelerator problems and “software” issues, but models with serious suspension problems, already proven wrong by numerous incidents, seems to be OK??? Unfortunately I enjoy the my Fortuner so much that I will still drive it despite it being a danger on the road.

Hi Gert
I also enjoy my car, and it’s a really capable 4×4 so I understand exactly what you are saying. I replaced the tires and shocks, and now the car’s roadholding is great.

Johann,
The Fortuner has proven to be a popular vehicle but there are a very many conplaints about the stability. Working in your favour is the resale price due to the popularity. My advice would be to replace the vehicle with another model. It is easy to find this kind of issue on the internet by doing a search (e.g. Google). Find a vehicle you like but do not be fooled by salesmen, do your own research.
Better luck next time,
Pat

We drive on gravel road more than 50% of the time and I was never comfartable with the handeling of the vechile. I keep my tyre pressure on 1.8 Bar when driving gravel road. It feels stabel but once you hit an uneven patch you get a very surprisingly scare if you struggle to get it back under control. We never exceed 80KM/h on gravel road. On wet gravel road the vechile is an absolute nightmare. We preffer driving the VW polo in wet conditions.
My tyres was changed by Toyota at their cost after 10 000Km. Why did they deliver the vechile in the first place if they knew there was a problem? I was advised to install a different suspension with BF Goodrich tyres. I’m waiting for toyota’s advice.
My experience from the newly Toyota fitted tyres is that there is still a big bubbel on the sidewall and to much movement of the tyre in the rim. According to me there was no improvement.
Any advice?
